Refugee Week 2023

The 19th - 25th June was the 25th anniversary of #RefugeeWeek! Gaynor at Your Voice is heavily involved with the New Scots and helped make this the best Refugee Week yet!

Monday saw the unveiling of the short film “New Beginnings”, following the journey and accounts of New Scots in Inverclyde. The film was show at the Beacon Arts Centre in Inverclyde, with some speeches given by various local figures. The film was created by Your Voice and featured audio from Martin O’Connor’s “New Worlds“, first-hand video recordings which our refugees took, and some audio telling their story.

If you missed the premiere then fear not! The film can be viewed on YouTube here.

Tuesday was the perfect day for a walk! The “Walk with Compassion” event was run in partnership with The Inverclyde Bothy. The New Scots and staff walked from The Overton Cottage to The Cut Visitor Centre and had a brilliant time out in the sun! It really is one of the best parts of Greenock and must be tried!

Wednesday was a double-bill of football and stained glass! Kevin from Your Voice hosted the annual United 5’s Football Tournament at Lady Octavia Sports Centre, it was an absolute blast and everyone had a great time. There were many partner organisations involved, including Moving On Inverclyde, Man On Inverclyde, Jericho House, Inverclyde Leisure, Community Learning and Development (CLD) and Mears provided food for all the guys! We really can’t state how muach we appreciated everyone who attended and helped make this event happen.

For other New Scots this was also a wonderful day, spent at Crow Cottage making stained glass designs with the amazing an Alec and Lou Galloway. This included a tour of the workshop downstairs! You can see more of Alec’s work here www.crowcottagearts.com/alecgalloway

Thursday it was time to sample some exotic goodies! The Syrian Food Bring and Share event at Greenock Latter-Day Saints was a taste sensation and helped locals learn more about other cultures, enjoy what they have to offer and maybe learn some new recipes! Many thanks to Colin Pomeroy from Inverclyde Community Learning and Development - CLD for organising a super social event!

Friday was our regular New Scots Drop-In, every Friday 11am - 1pm at our offices in 12 Clyde Square! Socialise with other New Scots, go on local outings, get help and advice from Gaynor at Your Voice. Stop by this week and learn more!
